Geotechnical 'P45' Slope Climbing Rig

The P45 is a unique track-mounted soil sampling rig, developed by this Company, in which a Terrier rig is mounted on a specially designed chassis to enable it to climb up and operate on slopes of up to 45°, safely and efficiently.

The rig has successfully carried out many ground investigations on railway and highway embankments and cuttings, earth-fill dams, and remote steep slopes. In the right ground conditions, the P45 is capable of…

  • Forming boreholes to 15m depth, of up to 128mm diameter, of which the first 8m can be cased.
  • Dynamic sampling of soils to obtain near-undisturbed continuous samples up to 112mm diameter retained in a plastic liner.
  • Undisturbed soil sampling of 70mm and 38mm diameter
  • Standard Penetration testing (SPTs) in general accordance with BS1377
  • Installing standpipes, monitoring and remediation wells, biaxial inclinometer tubing, and various other instruments
  • Dynamic probing in general accordance with BS1377
  • Forming boreholes for a variety of ground remediation techniques

The P45 is easily mobilised to site on a trailer towed by a Landrover, accompanied by a large van carrying all ancillary equipment and materials.
